MAY 2022 – Springwise Chair, James Bidwell, was joined by economist Kate Raworth as he opened Day Two of ‘the world’s largest event for the planet’, in Paris this month.
Appearing on the Gaia Stage at ChangeNOW 2022, Bidwell invited Raworth to discuss her ‘doughnut’ theory of economics – that states the key to a healthy and sustainable existence lies between the social foundation and ecological ceiling.
“Why can we not have businesses that are run to generate the maximum purpose benefit possible?” asked Raworth. “[At The Doughnut Economics Action Lab] we work with companies who want to look at their deep design. It’s not enough to say you are a purpose-driven business – how are you owned? How are you financed? It has to be in line with you actually achieving that purpose.”
“What can I say? Kate is a force of nature,” says Bidwell, following the session.
ChangeNOW, which took place 19-21 May, welcomed 33,000 participants from 117 countries. During the three-day event, Bidwell hosted a further two sessions (Designing Sustainable and Resilient Cities and Changing the ‘Business as Usual’ Mindset), during which he spoke with experts, including city mayors, about the real-world actions they are taking in their home countries.
