Sophie Bidwell in conversation with Satish Kumar

MAY 2022 – Re_Set co-founder, Sophie Bidwell, has interviewed Indian-British activist and speaker Satish Kumar on the importance of putting nature at the heart of every political and social debate.

Kumar, who is known for his campaigning work around nuclear disarmament, is currently Founder and Director of Programmes of the Schumacher College International Center for ecological studies.

“To be an activist, you have to be an optimist,” he told Bidwell during his interview. “And we have to act now. It’s like planting a tree… We are gardeners. Every day I plant the seeds… the seeds of hope, the seeds of transformation. I am 85 years old and I’m not tired. I want to remain an activist until the last day of my life.”

The conversation occurred during ChangeNOW 2022, which has been dubbed ‘the world’s largest event for the planet’. The summit took place 19-21 May in Paris and saw the involvement of 33,000 participants from 117 countries.

“My interview with Satish Kumar will remain in my memory as one of the most incredible conversations I’ve ever had,” says Bidwell.

Bidwell’s panel also saw her speak with Laetitia Langlois, Sustainability Manager at ESCP Business School; Tom Rippin, the CEO and Founder of social enterprise On Purpose; and climate change ambassador, Rebecca Nkunde. She also hosted a further session (Resilience and Adaptation), during which she spoke with further experts from around the world.
