What is COP26?
COP26 stands for the 26th iteration of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties. The first COP was held in Berlin, Germany in 1995 and since then, has gathered world leaders every year to assess global progress towards tackling climate change and to agree on a set of goals that reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in an equitable way.
This year, the United Nations Climate Summit COP26 will be held in Glasgow and will take place from 31 October – 12 November. COP26 represents the fifth COP since the Paris Agreement was created, which saw countries commit to preventing global warming from rising above 1.5 ºC. The Paris Agreement also states that every five years countries must revisit their promises and increase their ambitions. With global temperatures expected to rise above 1.5 ºC in the coming years, COP26 is a critical moment for climate action.
